Materials
book on caterpillars (see list below)
leaves (optional)
green and brown construction paper
markers and crayons
child-safe scissors
Instructions
* On each of the cards, write the
name of an insect, and glue a
picture of that insect to the
other side of the word card.
What to Do
1. Display the insect cards on the
chalkrail or on the rug so the
children can see them easily. Be
sure the images of the insects are
facing up.
2. Choose one insect name and write it on the lower half of the chalkboard.
Sound out the name with the children.
3. Ask a child to find the card with the image of that insect on it.
4. Flip the insect card over and hold it next to the written word on the
chalkboard and ask the children to make sure it is a match.
5. Ask the children to say the name of each letter in the insect's name. Challenge
them further to try to spell the insect's name.
6. Repeat, leaving the words written on the board.
7. To erase the words at the end of the activity, ask a child to choose a name card
and find and erase the matching word on the board.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children identify images of insects by name?
* Can the children identify the letters in each insect's name?
* Can the children read an insect's name with help?
