Instructions
1. Beforehand, trace the body (thorax) of a butterfly on black construction
paper. Make one for each child.
2. Give each child a piece of white construction paper and a piece of black
paper with the butterfly's body traced on it.
3. Encourage the children to cut out the butterfly's body and glue it to the
middle of the white construction paper.
4. Pour tempera paint into meat trays. Encourage the children to dip both
hands into the paint.
5. Demonstrate how to place each hand on the opposite side of the body.
Encourage the children to spread their fingers out to make a handprint.
6. Turn the paper upside down and have children repeat the handprints,
mirroring the other print and creating the butterfly's other wings.
7. Encourage the children to complete the butterfly by drawing legs and
antennae with markers.
8. After the butterflies dry, encourage the children to cut around the shapes
and then hang them for display.
