Materials

Four small cars Glue

Magnets Box or tray to store the items

Instructions

1. In advance, glue one magnet to the front and back of each car. Be sure to reverse the magnets on the front and back of each car, i.e., south on back and north on front.

2. Talk to the children about magnets and tell them that they need to be careful with the cars so the magnets do not fall off. Demonstrate how to experiment with the magnets.

3. Place the cars on a table and let the children see how the magnets will push away from each other, or pull to each other.

4. Ask the children why they think this is happening. Tell them that there is a north and a south pole to magnets, somewhat like their left and right hands and that neither of their hands ever change. Just as you can never shake your own hand, the same poles cannot stick together or shake hands.
