Instructions
1. Discuss Native American symbols. Draw some on the chalkboard. Explain that Native Americans would often draw a picture to symbolize a word or an event.
2. Give each child a piece of sandpaper, cut to whatever size will fit your toaster oven. Have the children draw pictures and symbols on the sandpaper using crayons. Press hard.
3. Place the drawings on a cookie sheet with heavy items on the edges of the pictures so they will not curl from the heat. Heat each sheet in the oven at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) for 20 minutes.
4. Observe with the children the changes in their pictures.
5. Make a construction paper frame for these shiny works of art!More to doMore art: For a variation of the above project, after you remove the pictures from the oven and cookie sheet, immediately place a white piece of paper over the top and rub with your hand. The melted crayon will rub off onto the paper, making a print.Sand and water table: Place damp sand in your table and encourage the children to use their fingers or a stick to draw pictures and symbols in it.
