Materials

2" (5 cm) cardboard or construction paper squares Clear contact paper

At least two of as many different coins as possible

Instructions

1. Prepare the pieces for a matching game. First, place a coin on each 2" square and then cover each square with contact paper. If you don't have enough preparation time, you can simply cover the coins with small paper cups.

2. Lay out the squares and allow the children to play a memory game by turning over two at a time to find a match.

3. For older children, you can vary the activity to make matches not only from identical coins but also from equal amounts, e.g., one quarter is a match for two dimes and a nickel. This version is easier using the paper cup method.More to doArt: Let the children make coin rubbings.More science: Children can invent their own coins with faces, and worth any amount they choose, using juice lids, milk bottle tops, etc.
