Materials
2 or 3 different types of tops or Hanukkah dreidels
Instructions
* Hanukkah is an eight-day celebration that is celebrated on the 25th day
of the Hebrew month of Kislev, which usually occurs in December (but
sometimes in November).
1. Show the children how the dreidels work and discuss the turning
motion. If children are old enough, let them experiment with spinning
the dreidels.
2. Encourage the children to act like spinning dreidels as you sing the
traditional dreidel song:
I have a little dreidel, I made it out of clay,
And when it's dry and ready, then dreidel I shall play.
Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay.
And when it's dry and ready, then dreidel I shall play!
Or try this variation:
I have a little dreidel, I bought it in a shop,
I like to see it spinning around like a top.
Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I bought you in a shop.
I like to see you spinning around until you drop!
3. Most likely, the children will spin and drop spontaneously as the words of
the song suggest! Repeats will be in demand!
More to do Ask the children to look around the classroom for other toys to spin, such
as balls and hoops. See which things spin the longest.
