Wednesday Word: Journey

As the saying goes, it is not the destination but the journey. This reminds me of our days in child care. It is not about getting “it” done—the diaper change, reading the book, circle time, the lesson plan, the meal, getting to the playground—but the total immersion and mindfulness of the journey. You initiate that diaper change with cues to the child, using his name and gently reminding him that you are picking him up. You talk about what you have noticed during the morning as you walk with him to the changing table that you’ve carefully prepared. You describe your actions, mindful of his facial expressions as they mirror your own, engaging in a special “I love you” ritual you know he loves. As you re-dress him, you talk about the texture of his clothes. You carry him back to spot where you began, gently placing him next to the toy he loves. You know that this mindful journey you trek daily guides the future destination of every child you touch.

In loving memory of Gryphon House author Leanne Grace, MEd, we are sharing pieces of her inspirational writing every Wednesday. Leanne was the director of professional development at Hildebrandt Learning Centers and a lifelong advocate for early childhood education.  She inspired the early childhood community to prepare children as lifelong learners with her ability to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. One person can make a difference, and Leanne did just that. She will be sorely missed.
