Wednesday Word: Fair

Wednesday Word: Fair

Fair is a four-letter word! “It wouldn’t be fair if Kim doesn’t sit in circle time like everyone else!” Is it fair to the rest of the children if Kim’s circle-time power struggle demands all of her teacher’s time and attention? How do you differentiate to meet the needs of individual children? What does it mean to be fair? In our classrooms, we talk about respecting diversity. At its core, respecting diversity is not necessarily about race and ethnicity but about understanding that our peers have different needs. Our words and actions can help children to understand and respect those differences. “Today, Kim is having a hard time being with us. I know she will join us when she’s ready.” Carry on with the best circle time ever, in fairness to the rest of the children. Trust that your respect and fairness will draw everyone in.

Leanne Grace Quotes | Gryphon House
In loving memory of Gryphon House author Leanne Grace, MEd, we are sharing pieces of her inspirational writing every Wednesday. Leanne was the director of professional development at Hildebrandt Learning Centers and a lifelong advocate for early childhood education.  She inspired the early childhood community to prepare children as lifelong learners with her ability to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. One person can make a difference, and Leanne did just that. She will be sorely missed.
