Wednesday Word: Fabric | Gryphon House

Decisions are the frequent fabric of our daily design. —Don Yaeger, author

Comforting fabrics in our lives come in the forms of comfy sweaters, favorite sweatpants, quilts and blankets, to name a few. Fabrics offer a rich vocabulary: wool, cotton, corduroy, and polyester. We are wearing curriculum that could be explored for a year or more. When asked, “Where do clothes come from?” you can begin a journey that moves from cotton seed to t-shirt or from lamb to sweater. The sheer variety of daily wardrobes provides extraordinary opportunities for sorting, classifying, and noticing similarities and differences: long sleeves, short sleeves, pockets, collars, cuffs, crew necks, buttons, zippers, snaps. Who makes clothes? How does a sewing machine work? How do clothes get to stores? How do pictures get on clothes? Try on a study of clothes—you’ll find it’s just the right size.

Leanne Grace Quotes | Gryphon House
In loving memory of Gryphon House author Leanne Grace, MEd, we are sharing pieces of her inspirational writing every Wednesday. Leanne was the director of professional development at Hildebrandt Learning Centers and a lifelong advocate for early childhood education.  She inspired the early childhood community to prepare children as lifelong learners with her ability to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. One person can make a difference, and Leanne did just that. She will be sorely missed.
