Exasperated best described the teachers dealing with Tony: “You never know what will set him off!” Chairs flew, feet kicked, and teachers were concerned for the safety of everyone near him. I wondered with them and challenged them to collect more data to try to detect a pattern. I wondered about a four-year-old whose subconscious knew that his out-of-control behaviors demanded the attention of adults, but he couldn’t control his impulses. I wondered how long these exasperated teachers could continue to be present to his demands yet still meet the needs of the other children. I feared for all the Tonys who exasperate teachers yet so desperately need their patience, wisdom, and willingness to continue to meet their needs.
In loving memory of Gryphon House author Leanne Grace, MEd, we are sharing pieces of her inspirational writing every Wednesday. Leanne was the director of professional development at Hildebrandt Learning Centers and a lifelong advocate for early childhood education. She inspired the early childhood community to prepare children as lifelong learners with her ability to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. One person can make a difference, and Leanne did just that. She will be sorely missed.
