In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins—not through strength but by perseverance. —H. Jackson Brown, A Father’s Book of Wisdom

Why does the word confront have such a negative connotation? In essence this word means to be face to face. Face-to-face communication can feel uncomfortable to us; today, much of our communication takes place electronically. Interestingly, we work diligently with children to face their peers, tell them what they are thinking, be specific in their demands, and do so respectfully. Perhaps, in their communications with co-workers and families, teachers should model the expectations they have for children. All communication should be a confrontation, a face-to-face meeting meant to deal with issues head on. Shift your thinking about confronting others to one of respect and willingness to come together to discuss any challenges or miscommunications.

In loving memory of Gryphon House author Leanne Grace, MEd, we are sharing pieces of her inspirational writing every Wednesday. Leanne was the director of professional development at Hildebrandt Learning Centers and a lifelong advocate for early childhood education.  She inspired the early childhood community to prepare children as lifelong learners with her ability to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. One person can make a difference, and Leanne did just that. She will be sorely missed.
