Wednesday Word: Complacency

October 7th, 2015 | 1 min. read

By Jenna Roby

The tragedy of life is often not in our failure, but rather in our complacency; not in our doing too much, but rather in our doing too little; not in our living above our ability, but rather in our living below our capacities. —Benjamin E. Mays, educator and scholar

Each day is a new beginning offering possibilities never imagined. How often do you begin a new day promising to connect; to be more joyful, playful, and calm; to forget schedules; and to belly laugh? Complacency and routine tug at the corners of your brain, pulling you into the path of predictability. Complacency is easy and safe. The unknown is unpredictable. Possibilities present themselves if we open our hearts and minds. Begin today by asking, “What else? What if?” Decide to try. Today you will be open to your new beginning.

In loving memory of Gryphon House author Leanne Grace, MEd, we are sharing pieces of her inspirational writing every Wednesday. Leanne was the director of professional development at Hildebrandt Learning Centers and a lifelong advocate for early childhood education.  She inspired the early childhood community to prepare children as lifelong learners with her ability to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. One person can make a difference, and Leanne did just that. She will be sorely missed.
