Flow with whatever may happen and let your mind be free. Stay centered by accepting whatever you are doing. This is the ultimate.
—Zhuangzi, Chinese philosopher
You know when you are feeling right about what you are doing—no disorganized thoughts and everything feels connected. Staying centered is the challenge. You play a pivotal role in keeping that equilateral triangle of relationship balanced among the children, their families, and you. Too often we feel the center of our work is planning great activities and having fun each day. While these are important aspects, they are not central to the bigger picture. The foundation of every decision you make—activities, environmental design, observations, and communications—is the long-term effect this choice will have on children, families, and your colleagues. Just as you know when you feel centered, you know when you are off center, too. Take time to explore when these feelings present themselves. Reflect with a colleague, and value off-center time as an opportunity for professional growth and learning.
In loving memory of Gryphon House author Leanne Grace, MEd, we are sharing pieces of her inspirational writing every Wednesday. Leanne was the director of professional development at Hildebrandt Learning Centers and a lifelong advocate for early childhood education. She inspired the early childhood community to prepare children as lifelong learners with her ability to find the extraordinary in the ordinary. One person can make a difference, and Leanne did just that. She will be sorely missed.
