The Importance of Reading in Early Childhood Education

A Message from Rebecca Berlin, President of Gryphon House Books

As we step into October, I am reminded of the transformative power of books. National Book Month is a time when we celebrate not just the act of reading, but the joy, wonder, and knowledge that literature brings to all of us, both young and old. For our team here at Gryphon House, this month holds a special significance, as we continue to champion the role of books in early childhood education. Our mission is to empower teachers, families, and administrators with resources that help nurture our youngest learners, and at the heart of this mission lies the foundational skill of reading.

The Foundation for Lifelong Learning

Reading is more than just a skill—it is a foundation for lifelong learning. In early childhood education, books are the gateways to understanding the world, sparking curiosity, and fostering empathy. A child’s reading ability by third grade opens doors to all other learning areas: mathematics, science, art, and even social-emotional development. Reading builds vocabulary, improves focus, and strengthens critical thinking. But beyond these academic benefits, it’s also about developing a love for stories, ideas, and lifelong exploration.

Reading in the Classroom and at Home

While early childhood programs and schools play a critical role in teaching the foundational skills of literacy, we know that reading truly thrives when it is supported at home. That is why we encourage collaboration between teachers, families, and caregivers. National Book Month is the perfect opportunity for families to build or renew the tradition of reading together. Whether through bedtime stories, weekend reading rituals, or family visits to the library, the shared reading experience builds strong connections and a love of learning that will carry children through their school years and beyond.

Books as Tools for Emotional Growth

Books are also powerful tools for emotional and social development. Children learn empathy and understanding through stories that reflect their experiences or introduce them to new ones. Stories about different cultures, family structures, or individual challenges help children navigate  their own feelings and the world around them. At Gryphon House, we strive to create books that support those who teach our youngest learners and inspire educators and leaders to help children see the world through diverse lenses.

Celebrating Reading During National Book Month

This October, I encourage everyone in the early childhood community—teachers, families, caregivers, and administrators—to make time for reading. Celebrate the stories that shape us, introduce children to new books, and foster meaningful conversations. Let’s work together to ensure every child discovers the power and joy of reading, one page at a time.

Here at Gryphon House, we are proud to be part of this journey. We believe that reading is the key to unlocking the world, and we will continue to support that belief in every book we publish.

Happy National Book Month!

Sincerely,

Rebecca Berlin, PhD
