Here are a few of our favorite preschool math and counting games:
Number Cubes
Materials:
- Two number cubes with the numerals 0-5 on each
- Strip of 2” by 10” paper divided into 2” squares
- Crayons or markers
Activity:
- Have the children roll the number cubes and look at the numbers. Encourage them to use one color to color in the number of squares corresponding to the numeral on one cube. Use another color to color in the number of squares corresponding to the other cube. Encourage the children to verbalize the number sentence they’ve illustrated.
Number Line Addition
Materials:
- Number line on a rope
- Two number cubes with the numerals 0-5 on each
Activity:
- Lay the number line on the floor. Invite one child to stand on 0. Ask another child to roll the cubes. Have the child on the number line walk to the numeral showing on one cube. Ask the children to predict where the walker will end up after walking the additional steps showing on the other cube. Invite the child to take the additional steps and check the predictions.
Beanbag Drop
Materials:
Activity:
- Each child starts with ten beanbags. Encourage them to drop the beanbags into the box/ use the beanbags inside and outside the box to make up number sentences. For example, if five beanbags land outside the box and five land inside the box, say, “Ten minus five equals five,” or “You started with ten beanbags, five are in the box. How many are left on the floor?”
