Materials

3' (1 m) stick or 1/2"- 3/4" (1.5-2 cm) dowel

Many colors and lengths of yarn, string, ribbon, or streamers, embroidery floss, fabric strips,and other string-like materials

Decorations, such as feathers, felt, foil, or flowers with stems

Glue

Masking tape

Instructions

1. Start wrapping the stick with yarn. With adult help, tie a half-hitch knot at the beginning or usemasking tape to attach the yarn securely to the stick.

2. Continue wrapping the chosen material tightly around the stick.

3. Change colors at any time. The new yarn can either be tied to the previous piece of yarn ortaped to the stick. Begin to wrap the stick with the new color, texture or material. Loose endscan be left hanging or neatly tucked in. Encourage creativity.

4. As wrapping continues, other decorative items can be tied, taped, glued, or wrapped into theyarn or string. This gives the wrapping a "surprise" character that makes it unique.
