Fingerpaint paper
Blue fingerpaint Yellow tempera paint Paper plates or Styrofoam trays Sponges cut in star shapes and crescent or full moon shapes WaterInstructions
What to do 
1. Give each child a sheet of paper and invite the children to create a blue fingerpainting. Let the 
paintings dry overnight. 
2. Pour yellow paint onto a paper plate or tray. Return the children's finger paintings to them. 
3. Wet the sponges and wring out the excess water. 
4. Have the children dip the sponges in the paint and apply the star and moon shapes to their 
painting.

Dramatic play: Paint a sheet with star-shaped sponges and glow-in-the-dark paint, then turn off 
the lights on a rainy day and climb under the sheet. 
More art: Show the children a picture of Van Gogh's "Starry Night" and compare their paintings to 
his. Use fingerpaints to create paintings of the planets in outer space. Create a starry mural for the 
classroom wall or bulletin board.
