Materials
6" to 8" orange traffic cones
6" rubber balls that fit into the open base of the conesInstructions
1. Set out the traffic cones. Show the children how to hold the points of the
cones down, like ice-cream cones.
2. Balance a ball on the open end of the cone. Talk with the children, asking
them what they think the cone resembles.
3. Demonstrate for the children how to move around the classroom while
holding the cone and keeping the ball steady within it.
4. Give the children time to experiment holding and carrying the cones and balls.
5. Line the children up in groups of four. Give a cone and ball to the first child in
each line. Challenge the children to walk the length of the room and back
without dropping the ball out of the cone, and then hand the cone to the next
child in line. If the children drop the ball, simply ask them to pick it up and put
it back in the cone.
6. Repeat the process until all the children finish walking the length of the room
with the cone.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l For an additional challenge, consider creating an obstacle course or non-linear
racetrack to move through, or have the children pass a single ball from cone
to cone.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following.
l Can the children fit the cones and balls together?
l Can the children move around the classroom with agility and concentration?
