Materials

10 or more clear, plastic jars with screw-on lids (18 oz. peanut butter jars work great)number cardstapecollection of small objects such as cotton balls, toy cars, crayons, marbles,1" cubes, birthday candles, and so on2 shoeboxes or small tubs

Instructions

1. Tape a number card to each jar. (Use numbers according to the children's ability level.) Place the jars and lids in one shoebox or tub. Place the collection of items in another bucket or tub.

2. Invite the children to practice their counting skills with this fun game for one or two players.

3. Put all the jars on the table.

4. The child reads the number on the first jar and then counts out that many like objects to place inside the jar (for example, 10 cotton balls into the jar with the number 10 card on it).

5. Instruct the child to screw the lid onto the jar.

6. The child continues counting objects for the remaining jars.

7. Children will develop estimating skills as they realize that 10 toy cars will not fit in any of the jars, but 10 cotton balls will.

8. Ask the children to remove the lids and empty the jars after completing the game so that others may play.
