Instructions

Make five 9" x 12" kite shapes in different colors, numbering them from 1 to 5.
* Make five 3" x 4" kite shapes, numbering them 1 to 5.
What to Do

  1. 1. Teach the children the following fingerplay:
    Five Little Kites by Susan Oldham Hill
    One little kite up in the air,
    Two little kites make a pair.
    Three little kites floating in the sky,
    Four little kites zoom way up high.
    Five little kites bobbing up and down,
    Swirling, twirling, to the ground.
  2. Choose five children to sit in front of the group holding the kite shapes in order from one to five.
  3. Ask the child holding the kite marked one to stand and lift the kite shape up as the children say the first line of the fingerplay.
  4. Ask each child, in turn, to stand and move his kite shape for each line of the fingerplay.
  5. Ask the children watching to say the fingerplay and hold up the correct number of fingers for each line.

Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can each child name the numbers on the small kite number cards?
* Can the children hold up the correct number of fingers during the fingerplay?
