Instructions
1. Select a second book in a series that you have already read to the children.
For example, if they are familiar with Clifford, the Big Red Dog by Norman
Bridwell, select a new book in that series.
2. Put the new book into a bag or box. Explain to the children that there is a
surprise book inside of it.
3. Give the children clues or hints about the book. Encourage them to guess the
identity of the book or main character after they hear the clues. For example:
* Clue #1: This book is about an animal.
* Clue #2: This book is about a dog.
* Clue #3: Norman Bridwell wrote this book.
* Clue #4: This dog's best friend is Emily Elizabeth.
* Clue #5: This dog is not small.
* Clue #6: This dog is red.
* Answer: This dog is Clifford the Big Red Dog.
4. After the children guess the identity of the character, read and discuss the new
book.
5. Over time, prepare a collection of Guess Our Book Guest cards and book
sets. Write the clues on an index card, laminate them, and store them in an
index card file box. You'll always be ready for an imaginative story time with
favorite book guests.
Decorate a gift bag or box to reflect the season of the year or to provide a hint
about the book's character. It's fun to use different gift boxes and bags to keep
the children's interest high.
